Why can hip and knee symptoms overlap?

Hip pain can spread into the groin, buttock or thigh and sometimes toward the knee. Pain near the hip may also originate elsewhere. Assessment helps distinguish these patterns rather than assuming the painful spot identifies the source.

Knee injuries can involve ligaments, tendons, cartilage or bone. A twist while bearing weight, a fall or sports contact provides useful information, but does not establish which structure is affected.

When should I seek medical care?

Call 000 for severe hip pain with fever or an inability to bear weight. Seek prompt medical assessment after an injury if you cannot walk, the knee looks deformed, feels unstable or cannot bend or straighten normally. A joint that becomes red or hot with fever also needs medical review.

Evidence and further reading

Sources checked 7 November 2026: Healthdirect: hip pain and Healthdirect: knee injuries. Individual findings determine whether rehabilitation, imaging or another referral is appropriate.

Choose an activity to discuss

Walking to the shops, using stairs, standing from a chair and returning to training are useful examples of functional goals. Note which activity is difficult, how much you can currently do and whether that has changed. Bring this information to your assessment rather than trying to select a diagnosis online.

Tell the full injury story

Describe any twist, fall, impact or change in training before symptoms began. Tell the clinician about swelling, locking, giving way and symptoms in neighbouring areas. Include past operations and relevant medical conditions.

Make rehabilitation fit your week

If you travel from Reservoir for appointments, discuss how the home plan will work between visits. Ask what equipment is needed and how to adapt the plan around work, family and transport. Bring any existing program to avoid conflicting instructions.

Returning to running or team sport

Ask which tasks will guide progression, how training will be adjusted and what the review points are. Describe your sport’s demands: accelerating, changing direction, jumping or contact. Ask who will coordinate advice if your coach or another practitioner is involved.

Questions before you leave

  • What does the assessment suggest and what remains uncertain?
  • Which activity are we tracking?
  • What change means I should contact you sooner?
  • When will we review the plan?
